Xi’an, Shaanxi—3rd May, 2016—Xidian University today announced that it has been named a GPUEducation Center by NVIDIA, a computer technology company that has pioneered GPU-accelerated computing.
GPU Education Centers are recognized institutions that have integrated GPU-accelerated computing into their mainstream science and engineering curriculum. GPU-accelerated computing leverages the parallel processing capabilities of GPU accelerators and enabling software to deliver dramatic increases in performance for scientific, artificial intelligence, deep learning, graphics, engineering, and other demanding applications.
Xidian University was recognized for its commitment to advancing the state of parallel programming education.
During the past decades, parallel computing technologies and multicore programming has been successfully taught in courses such as “Computer Architecture” at Xidian University. However, there were limited GPU-accelerated computing courses. As an efficient, high-performance parallel computing device, GPUs have been widely noticed and used in Xidian University. Many research groups have utilized GPUs in their research, so the demands for GPU programming course are urgent. To further familiarize students with parallel programming and GPU-accelerated programming, Xidian University will add two courses: “High Performance Computing” (Semester 6, 2 credits, 32 teaching hours), into both undergraduate and graduate teaching programs beginning in fall 2016. These courses will be delivered by Prof. Qiguang Miao and Dr. Jianfeng Song.
The chairman of School of Computer Science and Technology Prof. Quan Wang said, “It is excellent news to both students and staffs in our university. This education center not only can make professional GPU-accelerated computing training available to all members, but also can enable a tighter cooperation in both education and research between NVIDIA and Xidian University. In addition, the center will make NVIDIA GPU technology more popular among Xidian University members.”
Many research groups at Xidian University have utilized GPUs in their research, including the School of Computer Science and Technology, the School of Telecommunication Engineering, the School of Electronic Engineering, and the School of Software. The GPU Education Center at Xidian University will help researchers further disseminate the-state-of-art GPU computing education to students.
As a GPU Education Center, Xidian University will have access to NVIDIA GPU hardware and software, and NVIDIA parallel programming experts and resources, including educational webinars and an array of teaching materials. Xidian University students and faculty also receive access to free GPU programming training atnvidia.qwiklab.com.The comprehensive, self-paced training spans introductory to expert level coursework on a range of GPU programming languages, applications, libraries, programming models and tools. GPU Education Centers were formerly known as CUDA Teaching Centers.
